A dimpled look to the chin can occur when the mentalis muscle is contracted. This dimpled, pebbly, or orange peel (peau d’orange) appearance can be reversed with the application of botox to the chin muscle, causing the area to remain in a relaxed state even when contracted.

About the Procedure

Botox is commonly injected into overly active facial muscles to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles that develop due to repetitive movements. Botox can be used during a chemical brow lift to prevent the forehead movements responsible for deep brow furrows and lines between the eyebrows, or used in the periorbital region to reduce fine lines near the eyes called “crow’s feet”. When botox is used in the chin area, it helps to erase unsightly dimpling which may make individuals look aged or constantly worried. Before treatment, the patient’s skin will be cleansed and marked for where the botox will be injected. The provider will take care to not inject the botox too laterally, avoiding inadvertent weakening of the depressor labii inferioris muscle, which helps lower the bottom lip. The injection must also not be placed too superiorly, or closer to the lip, to avoid weakening the orbicularis oris muscle that surrounds the mouth and assists speech, eating, and facial expression. Once the muscles are injected, light pressure is applied to the area to prevent bruising. It may take several days to see an improvement in the appearance of the skin as the botox infiltrates the muscle.
